ISA surface science group

Our major research focus lies on the geometric and electronic structure of solid surfaces and on their transport properties. We study these with low energy electron diffraction, photoemission and micro four-point probes, respectively.  Special emphasis lies on the use of high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission using the group’s beamline SGM-3 at the synchrotron radiation source ASTRID in Aarhus.

The figure below shows a recent research highlight: the electronic structure of Bi(114) which supports a one-dimensional surface state. The state is non-degenerate with respect to the electron spin, meaning that the spin direction of the electrons determines the direction in which the electrons can move. The state is similar to the edge state in the quantum spin Hall effect.
