beer barrels

Aluminium beer barrels make excellent roughing pump reservoirs (after you have drunken the beer, that is). The idea is shown in the picture below. On the top of the barrel, you weld a flange and fix a manifold of KF valves. On one of these you fix a roughing pump, the others go to the roughing line of the system’s turbomolecular pumps. If you now want to turn off your roughing pump for a while (for example because of noise or vibrations), you can do this because the roughing vacuum reservoir in the barrel will sufficient to take care of the turbomolecular pump’s exhaust gas for a good while.
