window / viewport

Windows or viewports are flanges with glass in the middle for observation purposes. A simple viewport is shown below.

The tricky (and expensive) technology of the viewport is to establish a leak-tight glass vacuum seal which will survive a wide range of temperatures (during bakeout).

The transparent (glass) part of the viewport is not necessarily conventional glass. Other materials such as sapphire or MgF2. The different materials are often necessary for optical application in which you need transparencies to high photon energies or no change in the light polarisation, for example.
